ALBERTA, March 10, 2026 — Alberta farmers and ranchers completed a record number of Environmental Farm Plans (EFPs) in 2025, marking the highest participation in the program’s history. The strong uptake reflects a growing commitment among producers to adopt practices that protect soil, water, air, and biodiversity while strengthening farm sustainability and resilience.

The Environmental Farm Plan program guides producers through an assessment of their operation and helps them identify practical actions to reduce risks to the environment. In 2025, more Alberta producers than ever engaged with the program, completing comprehensive plans that lay out priorities for environmental stewardship.

“I was hesitant to start the EFP, but once I got into it, I realized how straightforward and worthwhile it really is. It turned out to be a comprehensive, practical tool that helped me look at my farm in new ways. I wouldn’t change a thing about the process,” said a dairy farmer from Lethbridge County.

“Alberta producers have a long history of strong environmental stewardship, and the EFP gives them a way to demonstrate that work,” said Lisa Nadeau, Program Director with Alberta Environmental Farm Plan. “This level of participation reflects the commitment farmers bring to caring for their land and sets the stage for continued improvements across the landscape.”

Key highlights from 2025 include:

  • 1121 EFPs completed, they highest number in the program’s history.
  • 5 consecutive years of growth in EFP participation
  • Over 33% of agricultural acres in Alberta are covered by a valid EFP (approved within the last 10 years)

The strong participation aligns with Alberta’s broader goals of supporting profitable farms that are environmentally responsible. The EFP process not only helps producers meet regulatory and market expectations but also supports access to cost-share funding for on-farm improvements. It also demonstrates that producers feel confident in the EFP program to keep their farm data secure.

“This milestone reflects the steady, hands-on stewardship Alberta producers bring to managing their land and operations,” added Kate Lovsin, EFP Program Coordinator. “Producers trust us to keep their information confidential and treat it with care. Their plan belongs to them alone, and their participation demonstrates the practical, everyday steps they’re taking to build resilience in their farms and support the environment.”

About the Environmental Farm Plan (EFP) Program
The EFP program is a voluntary, online planning initiative that helps agricultural producers identify opportunities to strengthen environmental stewardship and improve farm resilience.
